London 2012 Paralympic Games
29 August - 9 September 2012

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are not just about sport. They will also celebrate cultures, people and languages – in London, the UK and around the world. The four-year Cultural Olympiad, starting in the autumn of 2008, will comprise of local and regional projects and events, large-scale projects and mandatory ceremonies, reaching a crescendo with the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on 27 July 2012, starting a 60-day festival of sport and culture across the UK.

The Olympic Flag passes to the UK for 4 years at the closing ceremony for the Beijing Games, on Sunday 24 August 2008, which is a Bank Holiday Weekend.

The Paralympic flag is handed over to the UK on Wednesday 17 September 2008 and will reach out to communities through young people and education.

Launching the Cultural Olympiad
The Cultural Olympiad will formally launch on Friday 26 – Sunday 28 September, the weekend will demonstrate that London 2012 is about more than just two weeks of fantastic sport, it will open up creative opportunities for individuals, communities, organisations, boroughs, cities and counties to get involved. www.london2012.com/plans/culture

In the East of England, we are keen to use the Cultural Olympiad opportunity;
  • to use the cultural assets and events of the region to develop cultural tourism
  • to contribute to the London 2012 Games Cultural Programme
  • to increase participation in and engagement with culture, using the London 2012 Games as an opportunity to engage specifically with priority groups
  • to develop the capacity of the cultural sector in the region through working on the Cultural Olympiad
